Quick answer

One Piece is the best-selling manga series of all time, with 600 million copies in circulation as of March 2026, according to Shueisha. Golgo 13 is second at 300 million (July 2022) and Detective Conan third at 270 million (February 2023). The ranking uses the latest publisher-attributed circulation figure for each series; dates differ by series.

Japanese publishers do not report what readers actually buy. They announce copies in circulation (print runs shipped, and lately digital copies too), usually on a volume's cover band or at a milestone. Those announcements are the only figures that exist for most series, so they are what this list uses. Each figure below is the latest one we could trace to a publisher or rights holder, with its date. Because every series announces on its own schedule, the dates differ, and older figures for finished series may have grown since.

The ranking

1

One Piece

Shueisha put One Piece at 600 million copies in circulation worldwide with the release of volume 114 in March 2026, about 450 million in Japan and 150 million overseas. Its previous milestone, 510 million, came with volume 103 in August 2022. No other manga series is within half of that total.

2

Golgo 13

Golgo 13's 300 million figure, reported in July 2022, counts the franchise's collected editions in every format, including compilation reprints, so it is not a count of the standard volumes alone. The assassin thriller has run since 1968 and continued after Takao Saito's death in 2021; its standard-volume count passed Kochikame's in 2021.

Detective Conan

Japanese press reported Detective Conan (Case Closed) at more than 270 million copies in circulation in February 2023. The last figure Shogakukan itself announced that we could confirm was 250 million worldwide, in October 2021, when volume 100 shipped. Reports differ on whether the 270 million is a Japan or a worldwide total.

How we ranked this

Series are ranked by the latest cumulative copies figure we could attribute to the publisher or rights holder, in millions, highest first. Most are copies in circulation (shipped, not sold to readers), and newer ones include digital. Exceptions are stated per item: Golgo 13 counts compilation reprints; Dragon Ball and Slam Dunk are described as copies sold; Detective Conan's 270 million is a press report, not a Shogakukan statement we could see; KochiKame's is copies in print. Figures date from 2016 to March 2026 because publishers announce on their own schedules, so this is not a single-date snapshot. Attack on Titan's 140 million (November 2023) is a secondary report; Kodansha's last confirmed figure is 100 million (December 2019). Jujutsu Kaisen and KochiKame tie at 150 million and are listed alphabetically. Doraemon is excluded: Shogakukan's reported figure for its 45-volume edition is about 88 million (2020), and the 250 to 300 million worldwide totals often quoted have no publisher source we could find. Spin-offs and sequels count as separate series.

FAQ

How are manga sales counted?

Japanese publishers report copies in circulation: copies printed and shipped to stores, and in recent years digital copies too. That is not the same as copies sold to readers, but it is the figure publishers announce, so it is the one this list uses.

Why isn't Doraemon on the list?

Totals of 250 to 300 million copies are widely quoted for Doraemon, which would place it near the top, but we could not trace any of them to Shogakukan. The figure we could trace is about 88 million for the 45-volume collected edition, reported in 2020. Doraemon is left out until a publisher figure is available.

Are the figures all from the same date?

No. Each series' publisher announces milestones on its own schedule, so the figures range from 2016 (KochiKame) to March 2026 (One Piece). Finished series can keep growing, so older figures may now be higher.

Which series are just outside the top 10?

Other series reported above 100 million copies include JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (more than 120 million, January 2022) and Kingdom (more than 100 million, Shueisha, November 2023). Totals quoted for Oishinbo and Bleach could not be traced to a publisher statement for this update.
