China produced 30.86 million tonnes of hen eggs in 2024, more than India, Indonesia and the United States combined, according to FAO data.
China is the world's largest egg producer, with 30.86 million tonnes of hen eggs in 2024. India is second at 8.10 million tonnes and Indonesia third at 6.58 million tonnes, just ahead of the United States. The ranking uses FAO (FAOSTAT) production of hen eggs in shell for 2024, measured by weight in tonnes, not by number of eggs.
Eggs are one of the cheapest sources of animal protein in the world, and production is concentrated in a handful of countries. China alone outproduces the next three countries combined, and Asia accounts for most of the world's growth in output. This ranking uses one dataset and one year: the Food and Agriculture Organization's FAOSTAT production figures for hen eggs in 2024, measured by weight. It counts hen eggs only, so duck, goose and quail eggs are left out.
China produced 30.86 million tonnes of hen eggs in 2024, more than India, Indonesia and the United States combined.
India produced 8.10 million tonnes of hen eggs in 2024, the second-largest total in the world and about a quarter of China's output.
Indonesia produced 6.58 million tonnes of hen eggs in 2024, moving ahead of the United States into third place. That swap was the only change in the top ten's order from 2023.
The United States produced 6.47 million tonnes of hen eggs in 2024, dropping from third to fourth behind Indonesia.
Brazil produced 3.70 million tonnes of hen eggs in 2024, the largest total in Latin America and ahead of Mexico.
Mexico produced 3.27 million tonnes of hen eggs in 2024, sixth in the world and second in Latin America behind Brazil.
Russia produced 2.59 million tonnes of hen eggs in 2024, seventh in the world.
Japan produced 2.48 million tonnes of hen eggs in 2024, just behind Russia.
Turkey (Türkiye) produced 1.32 million tonnes of hen eggs in 2024, ninth in the world.
Pakistan produced 1.18 million tonnes of hen eggs in 2024, holding 10th place narrowly, with Argentina, Colombia and Bangladesh close behind.

Countries are ranked by 2024 production of hen eggs in shell (FAOSTAT item 'Hen eggs in shell, fresh'), measured in tonnes by weight, not by number of eggs. Rank 1 is the largest producer. All ten figures come from the FAO 2024 data as reported in WATTAgNet's analysis of FAO egg statistics; the China, India and Indonesia figures also match Helgi Library's FAOSTAT-based table (30,857, 8,102 and 6,579 thousand tonnes). Figures are rounded to two decimals of a million tonnes as published. Other bird eggs are excluded, which matters for countries such as China and Bangladesh that also produce many duck eggs; datasets that count all eggs give China a higher total. No two countries tie. Pakistan holds 10th place narrowly, with Argentina, Colombia and Bangladesh close behind.

By weight. FAOSTAT reports egg production in tonnes. Rankings by number of eggs can differ slightly because average egg weight varies from country to country.
Some datasets count all eggs, including duck, goose and quail eggs. This list counts hen eggs only, which gives China 30.86 million tonnes in 2024.
FAO puts world egg production in 2024 at 100 million tonnes, of which 94 percent were hen eggs. Output rose 1.7 percent from 2023, and Asia produced the majority of it.
