Southwest operates 810 aircraft and every one of them is a Boeing 737, making it the largest 737 operator in the world. The single-type fleet is the foundation of its cost model: one set of spares, one pilot qualification and interchangeable aircraft across a point-to-point network.
China Eastern flies 664 aircraft from Shanghai's two airports, Hongqiao and Pudong. In 2023 it became the launch operator of the COMAC C919, China's first domestically built single-aisle airliner, putting it at the centre of the country's effort to break the Airbus-Boeing duopoly.
Ryanair operates 643 aircraft, the largest fleet in Europe and the only low-cost carrier in the global top ten. Like Southwest it is effectively an all-737 operation, and it carries more passengers per year than any other airline in Europe.
SkyWest operates 579 aircraft and sells almost no tickets of its own. It is the largest regional airline in the world, flying Embraer E175s and CRJs on behalf of United, Delta, American and Alaska — so its jets appear in those airlines' liveries and timetables rather than its own.
Turkish Airlines operates 545 aircraft from Istanbul Airport and flies to more countries than any other carrier in the world. Istanbul's geography does most of the work: it puts a large share of Europe, Africa, the Middle East and South Asia within narrowbody or short widebody range of a single hub.
Air China rounds out the top ten with 510 aircraft. As the country's flag carrier it operates from Beijing Capital, holds the prestige long-haul routes out of the capital and provides the aircraft used for Chinese state travel.

Airlines are ranked by the number of aircraft they operate, as compiled in February 2026 in Wikipedia's 'Largest airlines in the world' table, which sources each carrier's count from that airline's own fleet disclosures and regulatory filings. Fleet counts are a moving target: aircraft are delivered, stored, leased out and retired continuously, so figures from different dates will not agree exactly, and this list follows one compilation at one date rather than mixing sources. Definitions also differ by carrier — the three US majors' numbers are mainline fleets and exclude the regional aircraft flown on their behalf under United Express, American Eagle and Delta Connection branding, while some other carriers report at group level including subsidiaries. Aircraft on firm order but not yet delivered are excluded throughout.
Not necessarily. Fleet size counts aircraft, so carriers with lots of widebodies and long-haul flying rank higher than their passenger numbers suggest. Airlines flying dense short-haul networks — Ryanair in Europe, Southwest and Delta in the US — carry more passengers per aircraft each year than a long-haul operator does.
