From the six-tonne African bush elephant down, the ten heaviest land animals alive today ranked by average adult body mass.
The African bush elephant is the largest land animal in the world by average adult body mass, at 6 tonnes. The Asian elephant is second at 4 tonnes and the African forest elephant third at 2.7 tonnes. The ranking uses average adult mass of extant land species, following Wikipedia's heaviest terrestrial animals table, as of September 2026.
Every slot on the all-time heavyweight podium belongs to a whale — we covered those in our Top 10 Heaviest Animals Alive list. Step out of the ocean and the picture changes: the land crown belongs to elephants, with rhinoceroses, hippos, giraffes and one wild bovid rounding out the ten heaviest terrestrial species. We ranked by average adult body mass in metric tonnes, the standard basis for comparing land mammals, and show each species' maximum recorded mass and average length as context. If you're looking for sheer scale, the chart below is drawn to scale so you can feel the drop-off from elephant to gaur.
The largest living land animal. Males average about 6 tonnes, and the largest recorded male — shot in Angola in 1974 — stood 3.96 m at the shoulder with a computed weight of 10.4 to 12.25 tonnes, nearly double the species average.
The second-heaviest land animal, averaging about 4 tonnes. Males commonly reach 2.75 m at the shoulder, and the largest recorded specimens top 7 tonnes — still well short of their African cousins.
Split off from the bush elephant as a separate species in 2021 after genetic evidence confirmed what ecologists long suspected. Smaller and stockier, averaging 2.7 tonnes, with a maximum recorded mass of 6 tonnes.
The largest extant rhinoceros and the heaviest non-elephant land animal, averaging 2 tonnes. Despite the name it is slate grey — "white" comes from the Afrikaans word "wyd" (wide), describing its wide grazing mouth.
The greater one-horned rhino averages 1.9 tonnes, with the largest bulls recorded at 4 tonnes. Its armor-plated skin folds and single horn make it the most distinctive of the five rhino species.
Averaging 1.8 tonnes but capable of exceptional individuals: the maximum recorded mass is 4.5 tonnes, matching the white rhino's record. Despite its squat look it can sprint at 30 km/h on land.
The rarest large mammal on Earth — fewer than 80 survive, all in Ujung Kulon National Park, Java — and also one of the smallest rhinos at 1.75 tonnes on average, with records up to 2.3 tonnes.
Averages 1.1 tonnes — lighter on average than its Javan cousin but with heavier outliers, the maximum recorded mass being 2.9 tonnes. A hooked prehensile lip distinguishes it from the grazing white rhino.
The tallest land animal doubles as a heavyweight: adults average about 1 tonne, with the largest bulls recorded at 2 tonnes. Bulls reach 5.9 m tall, and their neck vertebrae are each over 28 cm long.
The largest wild bovine — and the only non-elephant, non-rhino, non-hippo, non-giraffe to make the table — averaging 0.95 tonnes with bulls recorded at 1.5 tonnes. It ranks ahead of the American bison on the heaviest-land-mammals table.

We ranked the ten heaviest extant land animal species by average adult body mass in metric tonnes, following the "Heaviest terrestrial animals" table on Wikipedia's "Largest and heaviest animals" page (accessed September 2026); the order below matches its published averages exactly, rank 1 being the heaviest. Only extant, primarily terrestrial species are included — marine mammals and extinct species are out of scope. "Max recorded mass" and "Avg length" are included as context columns and do not affect the ranking. Elephant figures in particular are frequently computed estimates rather than scale-weighed values, since no scale fits a large elephant either; averages smooth out that measurement error.
The African bush elephant (Loxodonta africana), averaging about 6 tonnes as an adult. The largest recorded male, shot in Angola in 1974, stood 3.96 m at the shoulder with a computed weight of 10.4 to 12.25 tonnes.
The white rhino wins on average — about 2 tonnes versus the hippo's 1.8 — but both species have recorded maxima of 4.5 tonnes, so an exceptional bull of either can match the other.
It's the largest living reptile, but its average adult mass (~450 kg) and even its 2-tonne record fall below the ten heaviest terrestrial species here, which are all mammals.
Far heavier. The largest sauropods are estimated in the 100+ tonne range, and the giant rhino relative Paraceratherium may have weighed about 17 tonnes — more than any living land animal. This list covers extant species only.
