Updated October 18, 2026 10 ranked 3 sources

Quick answer

Chimelong Spaceship, at 75,350,969 litres certified by Guinness World Records, is the largest aquarium in the world. Chimelong Ocean Kingdom in China is second at 48.75 million litres and Singapore Oceanarium third at 45.2 million litres. The ranking uses total water capacity of all tanks and pools, from Wikipedia's List of largest aquariums, read 18 October 2026.

Public aquariums have grown from rows of fish tanks into indoor oceans holding tens of millions of litres. The largest now hold whale sharks, manta rays and orcas, and four aquariums have held the size record since 2005: Georgia Aquarium, S.E.A. Aquarium, Chimelong Ocean Kingdom and, since 2023, Chimelong Spaceship. This list ranks the ten largest public aquariums by total water capacity in litres, using the figures in Wikipedia's List of largest aquariums (read 18 October 2026). Only the No. 1 figure is a Guinness World Records measurement; the rest are operator or press figures collected on that page.

How we ranked this

Aquariums are ranked by total water capacity in litres as listed in Wikipedia's List of largest aquariums, read on 18 October 2026, which includes aquariums with more than 10 million litres in total or a tank larger than 5 million litres. Figures given there in US gallons are converted at 3.785 litres per gallon. Total capacity means all tanks and pools on site, so oceanariums with show pools (such as Moscow) count those pools. Figures come from different publishers and years: Chimelong Spaceship's is certified by Guinness World Records; most others are operator or press figures and have not been independently measured. Singapore's entry uses the 45.2 million litres published for S.E.A. Aquarium; it reopened as the expanded Singapore Oceanarium in July 2025 and no updated total is listed. No ties occur in the top ten.

FAQ

How is aquarium water volume measured?

Total water volume is the combined capacity of every tank and pool at the site, in litres or US gallons. Operators publish their own totals; only the current record holder, Chimelong Spaceship, has a total certified by Guinness World Records. The largest single tank is a separate measure.

Why are the two largest aquariums in the same place?

Chimelong Spaceship (75.35 million litres) and Chimelong Ocean Kingdom (48.75 million litres) are both parks of the Chimelong International Ocean Tourist Resort in Hengqin, Zhuhai, China. Ocean Kingdom held the largest-aquarium record from 2014 until Spaceship took it in 2023.

Which aquarium has the largest single tank?

Chimelong Spaceship, whose main tank holds 56.45 million litres (a Guinness record). Next on this list are Georgia Aquarium's Ocean Voyager at about 23.85 million litres and Chimelong Ocean Kingdom's largest tank at 22.7 million litres.
