Quick answer

The United States drank the most wine in 2025, an estimated 31.9 million hectolitres, followed by France (22.0 million) and Italy (20.2 million). The ranking uses total wine consumption by country for calendar year 2025 from the OIV's State of the World Wine Sector in 2025 report, published in May 2026.

World wine consumption fell for a fourth straight year in 2025, to an estimated 208 million hectolitres, down 2.7% on 2024 and 14% below 2018, according to the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV). Nine of the ten largest markets shrank, led by Italy (-9.4%); Portugal was the exception. This list ranks countries by total volume of wine consumed in 2025. Total volume favours large populations, which is why the United States leads; per-person rankings look very different and are not covered here.

How we ranked this

Countries are ranked by estimated total wine consumption in calendar year 2025, in millions of hectolitres (1 hectolitre = 100 litres), as published in Table 3 (page 16) of the OIV's State of the World Wine Sector in 2025 report (May 2026). All ten figures, the year-on-year changes and the 'Share of world' column come from that one table; no other year or source is mixed in. The 2025 figures are preliminary. OIV consumption figures are 'apparent consumption' estimates: production plus imports minus exports, adjusted for changes in stocks, so they measure wine available for consumption in each country rather than wine actually drunk. Every figure was checked against the OIV report itself in October 2026. China, ranked fifth in an earlier version of this page at 16.8 million hectolitres, consumed an estimated 4.8 million hectolitres in 2025 and is eleventh, outside the top ten.
