Quick answer
Guinea is the world's largest bauxite miner, with an estimated 150 million dry tonnes mined in 2025. Australia is second at 97 million tonnes and China third at 87 million tonnes. The ranking uses USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026 (February 2026) estimates of 2025 bauxite mine production, in dry metric tons, for the countries the chapter lists individually.
World bauxite mine production was an estimated 440 million dry tonnes in 2025, compared with 428 million tonnes in 2024 (both USGS rounded totals, which exclude U.S. production). Guinea, Australia and China are the only countries in the U.S. Geological Survey table that mined more than 50 million tonnes in 2025; no other country reached 35 million tonnes.
As a general rule, USGS says, 4 tons of dried bauxite is required to produce 2 tons of alumina, which in turn can be used to produce 1 ton of aluminum. The United States produced a limited amount of bauxite and bauxitic clay for nonmetallurgical use in Alabama, Arkansas and Georgia in 2025, but USGS withholds the figure to avoid disclosing company proprietary data.

The ranking
1
Guinea
Guinea mined an estimated 150 million tonnes of bauxite in 2025, up from 142 million tonnes in 2024, the largest absolute increase in bauxite output among the countries in the table. It holds the largest reserves of any country listed, 7.4 billion tonnes. In August 2025, USGS reports, the Guinean Government revoked bauxite mining licenses from a subsidiary of a United Arab Emirates-based aluminum producer and reallocated the concessions to a state-backed mining company.

Australia
Australia produced an estimated 97 million tonnes in 2025, down from 100 million tonnes in 2024, the largest decline in bauxite output among the countries in the table, in both absolute and percentage terms. USGS puts its reserves at 3.7 billion tonnes, of which 1.7 billion tonnes were Joint Ore Reserves Committee-compliant or equivalent.

6
Indonesia
Indonesia produced an estimated 10 million tonnes in 2025, up from an estimated 9.9 million tonnes in 2024, a figure USGS significantly revised in this edition. USGS says Indonesian bauxite production declined sharply following the country's 2023 ban on bauxite exports. Its reserves are 2.9 billion tonnes.

How we ranked this
Ranked by estimated 2025 bauxite mine production, from the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026 (February 2026) bauxite and alumina chapter, World Alumina Refinery and Bauxite Mine Production and Bauxite Reserves table. USGS reports the data in thousand metric dry tons; figures here are converted to million tonnes by dividing by 1,000, with no rounding. The table's 2025 column is marked 'e' (estimated); the 2024 bauxite figures for Brazil, China, Greece, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia and Vietnam are also marked 'e'. Only countries USGS lists individually with a bauxite production figure are ranked (13); the United States is excluded because its production is withheld ('W'), and the table's 'Other countries' row (8 million tonnes in 2025) is excluded. The USGS world totals exclude U.S. production. One tie is broken by 2024 output from the same table: Saudi Arabia and Russia both produced 5.7 million tonnes in 2025, and Saudi Arabia is placed ahead on its higher 2024 output (an estimated 5.5 million tonnes vs 5.47 million). There is no tie at 10th: Kazakhstan (4.8 million tonnes) is ahead of Turkey and Vietnam (3.8 million tonnes each). USGS made significant revisions to 2024 bauxite production for Greece and Indonesia based on company and Government reports, and revised reserves for Australia, Brazil, China, Indonesia, Kazakhstan and Russia. Reserves are as published in the same table. Year-on-year changes are simple differences between the table's 2024 and 2025 figures, some of which are estimates.
FAQ
Which country mines the most bauxite?
Guinea, with an estimated 150 million dry tonnes in 2025 according to the USGS Mineral Commodity Summaries 2026. Australia (97 million tonnes) and China (87 million tonnes) follow.
How much bauxite is mined worldwide each year?
USGS estimates world bauxite mine production at 440 million dry tonnes in 2025, compared with 428 million tonnes in 2024 (rounded totals that exclude U.S. production). World reserves are 29 billion tonnes, and USGS estimates bauxite resources at 55 billion to 75 billion tons.
Which country has the largest bauxite reserves?
Guinea, with 7.4 billion tonnes in the USGS table, followed by Australia (3.7 billion tonnes) and Vietnam (3.1 billion tonnes). Vietnam mined an estimated 3.8 million tonnes in 2025, outside the top 10. USGS revised reserves for Australia, Brazil, China, Indonesia, Kazakhstan and Russia in this edition.
Does the United States mine bauxite?
Only a limited amount. USGS says bauxite and bauxitic clay were produced for nonmetallurgical use in Alabama, Arkansas and Georgia in 2025, but the production figure is withheld to avoid disclosing company proprietary data. USGS says domestic resources of bauxite are inadequate to meet long-term U.S. demand.
Which countries' bauxite output changed the most?
Guinea had the largest absolute increase, from 142 million tonnes in 2024 to an estimated 150 million in 2025, and China the largest percentage increase, from an estimated 80.5 million to 87 million tonnes. Australia had the largest decline, from 100 million to 97 million tonnes.
Are these figures final?
No. USGS marks the 2025 production figures as estimates ('e') in the February 2026 edition, and in that edition it made significant revisions to 2024 bauxite production for Greece and Indonesia.
