Updated October 18, 2026 10 ranked 4 sources

Quick answer

Ne Zha 2 (2025) is the highest-grossing animated film of all time, with $2,217,758,382 worldwide. Zootopia 2 ($1.87 billion) is second and Inside Out 2 ($1.70 billion) third. Ranking is by lifetime worldwide theatrical gross in nominal US dollars, from Wikipedia's chart of highest-grossing animated films as of October 2026.

Animated films now sit among the biggest earners at the global box office. In 2025 Ne Zha 2 became the first animated film to pass $2 billion worldwide, and Zootopia 2 followed it to $1.87 billion later the same year. Disney, counting Pixar, has seven of the ten films below; Illumination/Universal has two, and Ne Zha 2 is the only entry from outside Hollywood. Figures are nominal, so recent releases are favored over older classics.

The ranking

1

Ne Zha 2

The 2025 Chinese fantasy sequel is the only animated film to pass $2 billion worldwide, with $2,217,758,382 in Wikipedia's chart, nearly all of it earned in China. Box Office Mojo's own total is higher (about $2.27 billion); the chart uses a figure compiled from Chinese sources because it judges Mojo's China number unreliable.

How we ranked this

Films are ranked by lifetime worldwide theatrical gross in nominal US dollars (not adjusted for inflation), including re-releases, exactly as given in the main chart of Wikipedia's List of highest-grossing animated films, accessed October 18, 2026. That chart takes most figures from Box Office Mojo or The Numbers, but uses its own compiled figures for three films it judges Box Office Mojo to have wrong: Ne Zha 2 (China gross), The Lion King 2019 (a UK re-release error) and Frozen (Australian double-counting). Using one chart keeps every figure on the same basis. Toy Story 5 was still in release at that date, so its total may rise. The Lion King (2019) is counted as animated because the chart includes it, although Disney classed it as live-action. Rank 1 is the highest gross.

FAQ

What is the highest-grossing animated film of all time?

Ne Zha 2 (2025), with $2,217,758,382 worldwide in Wikipedia's chart. It is the only animated film to pass $2 billion. Box Office Mojo lists a higher total of about $2.27 billion, but the chart uses figures compiled from Chinese sources.

Does The Lion King (2019) count as an animated film?

It is disputed. Disney called it live-action, but nearly the whole film is computer-animated, and Wikipedia's chart of animated films includes it. We follow that chart, so it ranks fourth. Without it, every film below would move up one place and Toy Story 4 ($1,073,841,394) would enter at tenth.

Can a 2026 film still move up the list?

Yes. Toy Story 5 (2026) was still in theaters in October 2026 with $1.148 billion, just behind Minions. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie (2026) had passed $1 billion but was outside the top ten.

Are these figures adjusted for inflation?

No. They are nominal US dollar totals, which is why most entries were released after 2010.

Which studio has the most entries in the top 10?

Disney, including Pixar, with seven: Zootopia 2, Inside Out 2, The Lion King (2019), Frozen II, Frozen, Incredibles 2 and Toy Story 5. Illumination/Universal has two (The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Minions), and Ne Zha 2 is the tenth.
